san⋅da⋅rac (san′da rak′) n. [L. sandaraca < Gr. sandarakē: of Oriental origin, prob. akin to Sans. canda-raga, having the glow of the moon] A species of Asian hardwood tree; an aromatic resin from the bark of several African and Australian trees (genera Tetraclinus and Callitris) of the pine family, used as incense.

Dear Friends,

For the holiday season, in November and December, Sandarac Gallery presents “Variations on a Theme of Small ’07,” featuring small oil paintings, pastels and watercolors by a group of our favorite artists. The exhibition will be at two location: Sandarac Gallery, 220 West Read Street and at Donna’, our good neighbor in Mount Vernon, at the corner of Charles and Madison Streets. All original works of art are priced at $500 or less. They vary in subject: the lush farmland of West Virginia in summer, misty figures on a beach, crystalline renderings of holiday resorts in Italy, ethereal urban façades, strangely distorted figures under water and more. The variety of techniques employed by these talented artists makes for a lively mix indeed - juicy palette-knife work, drybrush, jewel-like precision, atmospheric stokes defining form – the expression is remarkably diverse.

Amanda Achey paints urban scenes; Diana Suttenfield celebrates the countryside. Matt Bergbauer gives us crisp vignettes of the Italian seaside; Eb Froelich renders European landscapes and bright watercolors of flowers; Jim Condron offers stormy trees; Sandra Parra works with tropical imagery; Heidi Schneider’s mysterious figures gaze out over beach and sea; Mary Tait’s figures shimmer underwater; and Deborah D’Alba’s figurative works are subtle renderings of light on skin.

Please join us for the opening of “Variations on a Theme of Small ‘07” on Thursday November 1st between 5:30 and 7:30.
